So, I just went through an old hard drive of mine from college, and I grabbed all of the music off of there. My iPod went suddenly from 35 gigs to 65 gigs, and I’ve got a ton of new music to listen to… also, a headache from the mess of duplicate tracks now. But I’m gonna forget about that for now and focus on my playlist for this afternoon.

Belle & Sebastian – Dear Catastrophe Waitress
This is new for me. I don’t think I’d actually heard them until this week. I know, I’m at least a decade behind on this one, but it feels like I’m about 30 years behind. They have a really mellow, polished sound that makes me think they’d fit in in a Woody Allen movie or something along those lines. I really don’t know how to describe them, they’re just refreshing.
Song That Really Grabs Me: If She Wants Me

R.E.M. – Out of Time
I woke up this morning with the song “Low” in my head, for some inexplicable reason, and I’m really glad I did. I had forgotten how good this disc is all around, with a whole slate of great tunes. It’s nice background music, but it’s also something you can really get into too.
Song That Really Grabs Me: Half A World Away

Jay Farrar and Benjamin Gibbard – One Fast Move Or I’m Gone: Music From Kerouac’s Big Sur
A friend of mine recommended this album, a collaboration between Farrar — whom I know very little about except that he was in Uncle Tupelo with Jeff Tweedy, who went on to form Wilco — and Death Cab/Postal Service genius Ben Gibbard. Honestly, it took me a while to get into it. I was drawn, for obvious reasons, to the Gibbard-driven songs before the Farrar ones, but after listening in the car, the shower, and as I fell asleep at night, I’ve found another record for heavy rotation. Like the other two albums today, this one’s pretty mellow, lots of acoustic guitar and piano. Like Kerouac’s work, it seems like this would be wildly appropriate for a road trip.
Song That Really Grabs Me: California Zephyr

iPod photo from Apple, and album cover images from Amazon… not that they need my help selling anything. Disclosure: I used to work for Apple. Listen on a Zune or an iPod or whatever you want.
